We recently showcased our second juniors-only production – Alice in Wonderland Jr. – at the Camden Show Hall to enthusiastic family and community audiences. Based on the Disney animated film and adapted especially for younger performers, the show offered a fun and imaginative journey through Lewis Carroll’s classic story.
The production featured a cast of young performers from across Camden and surrounds, many of whom were stepping onto the stage for the first time. The cast worked hard over the rehearsal period to bring a colourful array of characters to life – from Alice and the White Rabbit to the Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat, and Queen of Hearts.
The show was directed by Hayleigh Burman, with musical direction by Kayla Hall and choreography by Sasja Penman, assisted by Tiana Giampaolo. Together, the creative team focused on providing a supportive and encouraging environment where our young cast could learn and grow in confidence. And what a brilliant time we all had.
Staging elements were kept simple but effective, with some fun moments of theatrical magic (such as Alice growing and shrinking) that added to the storytelling. The production team made thoughtful use of lighting, sound, and costumes to support the cast and create a vibrant Wonderland on stage.
“The show may have simple staging, but I found it engaging and enchanting. I certainly enjoyed it more than some of the big pro shows in the city. At only an hour, it’s a good way to kick off a night out. It’s been ages since I laughed so much in live theatre. I left with a grin so big on my face that the Cheshire Cat would be jealous”.

Rehearsals placed a strong emphasis on ensemble work, stage presence, and commitment to character. Our wonderful cast responded with energy and enthusiasm, bringing a sense of fun and teamwork to each performance.
Alice in Wonderland Jr. was a valuable experience for everyone involved, from performers and crew to volunteers and our families, both new and returning. It offered a chance for our young people to engage with musical theatre in a hands-on, creative way while contributing to Camden’s vibrant and growing performing arts scene.
We are so thankful to everyone who supported this production, including our cast, production team, our audiences, parents, carers, sponsors, and volunteers. We can’t wait for the next one!
